April 2024 Dividend Income Update

April has turned out to be a volatile month for the markets. I took that opportunity to purchase more shares of XGRO.TO. I didn’t get a chance to add to my other stocks. I haven’t had the chance to research my holdings more closely. But I am looking to consolidate my holdings. For example, I might consider consolidating all of my Brookfield holdings into Brookfield Corp (BN.TO). In the past, I purchased stocks in various companies to diversify my industry exposure. But there are stocks in industries that I don’t understand well so that defeats the purpose of diversifying to reduce risk. For example, I don’t follow CAE (CAE.TO) or Magna International (MG.TO) at all. I also purchased stocks in two companies in the same industry to avoid risk due to a single company. A good example of this is BCE (BCE.TO) when I prefer Telus (T.TO). So in the next month or so, there may be some consolidation and purchasing of shares in companies that grow my exposure to specific industries.

In April, I received a total of $3,798 in dividends and interest. I earned a cumulative passive income of $20,056 year-to-date. For comparison, I earned a cumulative passive income of $11,372 this time last year. At the end of 2023, I earned $46,079 in passive income. Of the dividends received this month, $3,460 was available to withdraw without penalty.

As a reminder, I convert any USD amount to CAD using the month-end exchange rate published by the Bank of Canada. For April 2024, I used an exchange rate of 1.3746.

Conagra Brands (CAG) was purchased due to options assignment. Half of the shares were called away due to a covered call assignment. I have a higher covered call strike price for the remaining shares.
