July 2024 Dividend Income Update

The markets have headed lower since the middle of July and the start of August has been extremely volatile. The CNN Fear and Greed index is at extreme fear. With a conflict looming in the Middle East, I certainly expect markets to continue lower. The heightened volatility has made it profitable for options sellers like myself since options premiums increase with volatility. I’m also excited about the opportunity to pick up shares of companies at lower prices.

I completed my account transfers from Questrade to Wealthsimple. It took about 2 weeks per account, but it’s finally done. I’m now transacting shares without trading fees and those pesky ECN fees. I’ve also had positive experiences with Wealthsimple customer support. More details to come in another post.

In July, I received a total of $5,084 in dividends and interest. I earned a cumulative passive income of $36,652 year-to-date. For comparison, I earned a cumulative passive income of $24,447 this time last year. At the end of 2023, I earned $46,079 in passive income. Of the dividends received this month, $3,563 was available to withdraw without penalty.

The dividend payment was higher this month because the shares of VTI paid their dividend in July instead of June, as it usually does.

As a reminder, I convert any USD amount to CAD using the month-end exchange rate published by the Bank of Canada. For July 2024, I used an exchange rate of 1.3809.
