November 2023 Dividend Income Update

As I mentioned in my previous post, I moved my US accounts from TD Ameritrade to Interactive Brokers. The account transfers are now complete along with cost basis transfers. The process was painless. I even executed an option trade. What I don’t like is not having real-time quotes.

There is currently an offer at Wealthsimple where an account transfer of $100k or $200k will get you an iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro, which stacks with referral bonuses. This is an extremely popular offer and Wealthsimple does offer a compelling product. I considered transferring my accounts over, but I’m going to wait until the new year, but the iPhone offer won’t be available then. I noticed that Questrade changed its transfer-out fees. While the full transfer fee is still $150, the partial transfer fee increased from $25 to $150. The low transfer-out fee was a loophole that I was planning to exploit. While Questrade has been good so far, it and many of the brokerages have not innovated. I look forward to the day when we have the same low-to-no brokerage fees that are offered in the US.

In November, I received a total of $2,983 in dividends and interest. I earned a cumulative passive income of $38,230 this year. For comparison, I earned a cumulative passive income of $26,043 this time last year. At the end of 2022, I earned $31,566 in passive income. Of the dividends received this month, $2,498 was earned in my taxable account.

As a reminder, I convert any USD amount to CAD using the month-end exchange rate published by the Bank of Canada. For November 2023, I used an exchange rate of 1.3871.
